Ideas, materials, construction, variety
Based in Norfolk my practice focuses on sculptural work and drawing. I have had parallel careers of architectural design conforming to strict requirements, legislation and client behests - whilst also creating imaginary forms and shapes that spring from subconscious explorations.
My larger sculptural pieces are often a response to sculpture trails that have a specific theme. I enjoy researching, working out the design, sketching alternative methods of construction and logistics, creating prototypes and producing the final work in situ.
Many of my installations include re-cycled materials and objects, the same structural metal work shape has seen three iterations in three totally different installations. This does mean that some works have a limited life-span, so these sculptures become temporary, they are transient and not designed for perpetuity. They become part of the cycle of recycling.
I’ve always been an advocate of life-drawing as a discipline and observational practice. Every month I organise a drawing session in our village. Observation and sketching is important to me for the discipline of looking and for recording ideas and working through ways of construction and presentation.
